Nice work Kristopher!

365 Portraits by Bill Wadman

Portrait of Daniel Krieger by Photographer Bill Wadman

My friend Daniel Krieger (pictured above, aka Smoothdude) turned me on to the work of Bill Wadman, who is working on a project called 365 portraits. Bill took that photo of Smoothie.

I’ve seen a lot of people working on 365 photo a day type projects, but Bill’s is one of the best I’ve seen yet. What Bill is doing is pretty simple actually, he’s taking 365 different portraits of people and then posting them each day. But what makes his project worth checking out for me is the quality of his portraits and the interesting people he is choosing to shoot. The portraits really are amazing, some of the best that you’ll find out there. The composition, lighting, backgrounds, people themselves are all beautifully orchestrated. Daniel said he’s shooting with a 5D. And he’s finding some exceptionally interesting people to shoot. Here’s one of my favorite portraits of Wadman’s.

Anyways check it out. You won’t be disappointed. It’s good stuff.

Hot Donkey, Pownce Integrates Zooomr Thumbnails

Zooomr Integration in Pownce

[I’m CEO of Zooomr]

Well I was really pleased this morning when I saw on my Zooomr Zipline a note from Kristopher that Pownce had integrated Zooomr thumbnails into their service. I’ve been using Pownce pretty early on since they launched and it has completely become my Twitter alternative.

Adding the ability for me to post my Zooomr thumbnails in my Pownce stream makes it that much sweeter of a service for me.

A lot of people have asked me why I like Pownce over Twitter. There are two reasons really.

The first reason is the file sharing. I LOVE this feature more than any other on Pownce. The ability to share an mp3 music file with a friend (I don’t consider sharing an mp3 with a friend stealing and look at this as more fair use in the same way that I used to make audio mix tapes for my friends back in the day) is a truly great feature.

The second reason is that Pownce just feels more like a conversation to me. I’m not sure exactly why this is and can’t pinpoint it exactly, but I feel like things get drowned out in Twitter whereas with Pownce it feels easier to follow the back and forth of conversations.

I still use Twitter, but more as a place to broadcast things one way than anything.

Pownce also has added video embedding into their service as well. You can check out the whole announcement here. Oh and if you are on Pownce feel free to add me here. I’ve also got 11 invites to hand out if anyone needs them. First come, first served. Just shoot me a fanmail note on Zooomr with your email address and I’ll invite you.

There is a Pownce discussion group on Zooomr if you want to check it out here.

Anyways, a very cool addition to Pownce. Thanks Daniel and Leah and team!

Want to See What Kind of Truck an Asshole Drives?

My Guy in the Orange Truck Rant

Well, one of the things about having a blog is that it’s a personal web blog. Well, at least mine is. And so while most of things that I write about are things like digital technology, photography, etc., every so often my blog reverts back to a personal web blog and we get a good old fashioned rant. I suppose it just feels good to get it off my chest.

So forgive the indulgence if these kind of rants turn you off…

…but

What kind of asshole and his friends party out in the parking lot at the San Jose Motel 6 until 3 a.m. in the morning, keeping everyone there awake all night? What kind of person thinks it’s cool to blast their bitchin’ stereo system on your too cool for school orange piece of crap truck while proceeding to get drunk all night. And why start showing off how your truck alarm works at 2 a.m.? Why not just start doing that at midnight? Why wait until 2 a.m. to show your friends how it works? Yeah, ok, that’s cool how the horn blasts when it goes off, but for Pete’s sake man, people are trying to sleep.

Ok, I understand you need to party. We’ve all been there. But how about partying in your room? Or maybe at the bar down the street. On the hottest night of the year in San Jose don’t you think that some of the guests staying at the Motel 6 might have their windows open as the crappy air conditioning at the San Jose Motel 6 simply does not work?

And if that’s not bad enough. Why the need to be back out in the parking lot at 8am the this Sunday morning with your truck parked diagonal blocking one parking lot exit with both doors wide open blasting out even more Spanish music as loud as your truck will play it. Can you imagine that after being kept up all night by you and your asshole friends that some people *might* try to get a little sleep? What’s the purpose of blasting your music so that *everyone* in the Motel 6 complex can hear it? Do you think people are saying to themselves, “oh, hot donkey, Spanish music coming from that bitchin’ orange truck out there. That guy is so cool”?

Yep, that photo above is of your truck early this very morning, both doors open, blasting crappy music from the parking lot while you were doing God only knows what in your room.

The inconsideration of some people just amazes me. So nice work Mr. California license plate number 7A03136 with the Central Valley Automotive license plate frame, whoever you are. Thanks a million for the three hours of sleep I ended up getting last night. I hope you and your friends had a hell of a time while my son and I were trying to sleep.

Yes, yes, I know. You get what you pay for. If you don’t want to be kept up by partying assholes in the parking lot all night, don’t stay at the Motel 6. But I remember a different time. I grew up staying at Motel 6’s when we went on vacation. Motel 6 used to be a place where you could get a clean and quiet room with air conditioning that worked.
