Over the past few days I’ve been watching the Roman Polanski story unfold. As much as I’ve been repulsed by Polanski’s 1977 rape of a 13-year-old girl, I’ve been absolutely flabbergasted and offended by the list of Hollywood elites and celebrities who have recently signed a petition demanding his release. Posting their names publicly in support of Polanski speaks loudly regarding their own lack of personal ethics and morality. Regardless of their friendships or professional affiliation with Polanski, by supporting him this way they are saying to the world that some of us are above the law. That some of us, due to artistic talent or past tragedy in life, or whatever, ought to somehow get a pass when it comes to the serious crime of raping a young girl.
Yesterday, for the first time, I read through the transcript testimony that Polanski’s victim gave shortly after he committed his crime. It is graphic and sickening. Although it is disturbing, I’d recommend reading through it should you have even an inkling of feeling of support for this man. Some of the relevant details can be found in this op/ed piece written by Steve Lopez over at the Los Angeles Times.
I’m just a small time blogger and have nowhere near the voice of Hollywood A Listers like Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and others. But it’s hard for me to just sit by and not react to the brazen, public ethical and moral failure that their signatures on their petition represent. So I’ve decided to create my own petition that people can sign. My petition is one in support of the extradition and criminal prosecution of Polanski. If you’d like to sign it feel free to indicate so by signing your name as such in the comments here at my blog or on FriendFeed and I’ll append them to the petition itself. If you’d like to include a link to your blog or to an organization that you represent or are affiliated with as well feel free to add that too.
Petitions carry no real legal significance of course, but they can matter in terms of public opinion in cases like this. And even if I’m the only one who signs this, as a father of two young girls myself, I’ll at least have added my voice in some small way to the repudiation or Polanski and his supporters.
PETITION SUPPORTING THE EXTRADITION OF ROMAN POLANSKI
Recently we have learned of the arrest of Director Roman Polanski on a 1978 warrant stemming from his fleeing a sentencing hearing related to a rape he committed of a 13-year old girl in 1977. We are outraged that Polanski has been able to escape justice this long for his crimes and that has been allowed to live as a free man abroad for over three decades. Regardless of one’s artistic achievements, regardless of one’s life tragedies, regardless if someone felt that they could travel legally in a neutral country, regardless of whether or not someone is being honored with a lifetime achievement award at a film festival, the crime of raping a child deserves punishment and the perpetrator of such an act should be brought to justice.
Money or powerful celebrity friends or political influence or artistic accomplishment should not have a bearing on one’s culpability for one’s crimes. All should be considered equal in the light of the law and Polanski should be afforded no special consideration given his status as a celebrity and artist.
As such, the undersigned fully support the extradition of Roman Polanski to the United States where he can finally be properly sentenced for his crimes.

Count me in Thomas.
I support this petition.
I concur.
Thanks for a voice of reason on this. I’m in.
You have my support as well.
Where’s the dotted line to sign? Count me in, too.
Thomas, setting aside your petition and your passionate position on the case for a moment: How familiar are you with the Polanski case? Have you watched the documentary “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”?
Thank you for doing this Thomas, add me to the list.
Heck, same questions go for Kenton, Glen, Stefan, Tom, Joanne, and Holger.
i agree with this article.
Thank you for your action, Thomas!
a-reader, I’ve spent most of the past two days reading everything I can find on the case including all of the publicly available court transcripts I can find. I haven’t watched the documentary yet but plan on doing so later today.
His art doesn’t forgive him. Count me in.
Count me in TH. Being a great director does not excuse the crime.
Agree on “his art doesn’t forgive him”. But I have some unease just willy-nilly signing this petition considering what was exposed in the documentary about the corrupt judge and prosecutors. The judge especially. Technically, there should have been a mistrial. And probably a retrial with a much more legit judge. If the outcome of that had been a long sentencing, I suspect Polanski would have done it.
Add my name please.
He should face his sentencing like non-celebrities.
Please add me!
Sign me up!
a-reader, even if there was misconduct on the part of the judge and prosecuters, this does not justify his fleeing sentencing nor especially his original act of raping this girl. Our courts have an appeals process to ensure that justice is served. Polanski had/has ample financial resources to ensure that he received/receives the best legal representation that money can buy.
I don’t buy that a corrupt judge legitimizes his actions and still fully support his extradition. I will watch the documentary though later today and I will respond back here in the comments after viewing it.
The man raped a 13 year old girl.
Please add me to the petition, because http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/09/28/polanski_arrest/index.html and http://www.jimchines.com/2009/09/polanski-apologists/
Thank you,

I support this petition completely.
Please add me Thomas. I absolutly support this petition.
I sign.
Thank you. This is what I was looking for. Please add me to the petition.
Add my name.
Put me on there, Tom.
add my name
put me on this petition, he deserves the rest of his life in prison
Tom;
You can go to http://www.gopetition.com and at no cost you can post your petition. I have one there’Reaffirmation of Peoples America.’
Please add my name to the Extradite Polansky petition; he is a real scumbag.
I don;t care if he wrote the Magna Carta, and had Robert Redofrd star and the movie gets nine hundred oscars…
The act of child rape is too violent, too pathological, too damaging, and too repeatative to ever forgive.
While getting him off the world streets may only save one innocent, at least it will save one…
Get his a** back here, and let him rot…
Please add my name to the list. And if you come across a listing of all the celebrities and filmmakers who signed the petition in support of Roman Polanski, please pass it on. I’d like to boycott their future work in protest. The shame.
Signed he needs to go to JAIL! 45 days served was for Observation and Not jail time.
I’m in. A crime was committed, and he’s been running for far too long.
It doesn’t matter if the offence took place 30 years ago.
It doesn’t matter if the victim would prefer not to press charges.
What matters is that Roman Polanski faces the judicial process for a truly horrible crime against a defenceless 13 year old girl.
You can add my name too.
Please add me to your petition. Being rich should not give you a get out of jail free card.
Add my name, I support this petition.
Please add me to the list!! Thank you for starting this petition too.
Add me to the list – a guilty man doesn’t run :p
What Polanski did was heinous. The celebrity petition is abhorrent.
But I’m not sure things are so clear cut. As Andy C hinted, Polanski’s victim wants the case to go away so she can get on with her life, and has gone so far as to file to have the charges against him dismissed[1].
Is her desire for her and her family not to be traumatised all over again outweighed by society’s need to punish Polanski? I’m really not sure.
[1]http://edition.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/01/12/polanski.case/index.html
send short-eyes to the poke-eeee!
Polanski getting away with this send the wrong message. He was in his mid forties, gave drugs and champaign to a 13 year old girl. Then raped and sodomized her when she was telling him to stop. He believed that he was above the law. Then he fled the country right before his sentencing was to occur.
I don’t care if she is past it. She and her family was paid off. Much like Michael Jackson did with the children he was in contact with.
I don’t care if he is a little old man or if he made one of the great film noire movies. I don’t care about his escaping the nazis. He drugged and raped a child and has not suffered one bit. He has houses throughout the world and has lived the high life. Time for him to face justice.
I am in favor of the extradition and prosecution of Roman Ploanski.
I have the same feeling like you. People that i know as good artists (for sure Akin, Aronoffsky, Mendes, Woody Allen – he is unfurtunately not the Woody 20 years ago) together with people that i know they are terrible, for example Kundera. They do not want normal justice, they love skillfull artist but pervert figure. What would say Kate Winslet to her husband Mendes? What can be their own piece of work if they are acting and thinking this way?
Sign me in please: Mikolas Fabian, designer, Prague, Czech Republic, born 15. january 1967
I agree with everything you say, Thomas. The crime couldn´t be more horrible. She was only a child, he gave her drugs, and he was shamelss enough to escape from justice. There’s no possible way to justify him. And I can’t find a way to justify the artists who support him, I think they are vile as he is, and they should be ashemed to call themselves artists. I sign the petition and thank you for taking action on this.
Sign me up.
Signed. Bring him back.
a-reader, I just finished watching the documentary you suggested above. I am afraid that this documentary in no way changes my view that Polanski should be extradited to the United States. Regardless of any judicial misconduct, Polanski raped, and especially viciously raped, a 13-year-old girl.
Personally I think that the fact that he was ever even allowed to plead down to a single count of unlawful sex was in and of itself a miscarriage of justice.
The fact that Polanski was concerned that the judge may have possibly sentenced him to more jail/prison time is inconsequential. Like everyone else, Polanski has a right to an appeal and should he have believed that judicial misconduct had occurred, he was well within his rights to approach his situation through the legal appeals process.
Instead, like a coward, he fled. He deserves to be extradited and brought to justice for the crimes he has committed. I stand by this petition and appreciate the voice of others who have also signed it.
Why has France never charged him? Justice has to be done. He has to face his trial.
This is appalling, please add me to the list.
I completely support the petition.
Nail that SOB and bring him to prison. Lets not forget he has a daughter too.
add my name
I’ll proudly add my name to that list.
Signed! Bring him home!
Extradite away! The judge surely won’t be the same one from 30 years ago, so who cares what he feared back then? If Polanski would have been a stand-up guy under the right conditions back then, what the heck’s been stopping him the past 15 years? Oh, that’s right; he wants to live it up and do whatever pleases Roman!
I fully agree. Please add my name.
Thanks for putting this up. Please add me as well.
I agree with this petition. No man is above the law. Period.
I strongly agree with this petition. A crime not like this should not go unpunished.
He should defi be punished. A crime is a crime. His stature doesnt make him immune to punishments. I fully support this.
I strongly agree. Put my name on it. Shame on all those ***holes who signed the ‘Free Polanski’ petition, no matter how talented. A HUGE disappointment to see some of my favorites on that list.
I made a blog post about this yesterday and as such someone pointed me here, I am in full agreement and wish to add my name to the petition.
Please add my name to this petition. In an ideal world, this petition would have no less than 6 billion names on it.
Put me on there TH.
Sandra Grigoletti
A voice of sanity. Please include my name to this petition. Roman Polanski may be a gifted director – but being a wealthy talented artist should not excuse him or minimize his crime. He drugged, raped, sodomized a 13 year old – grade 8 girl. I can’t stomach the comments – oh well it happened 30 years ago, the justice system was being unfair, it costs too much to prosecute him now, it wasn’t rape-rape, she had hit puberty, he’s been a good guy since, shouldn’t arrest him at a film festival, he and his family are suffering? What is the matter with people? Whoas the poor Roman Polanski – he might have to pay for his sick evil crime. And to his defenders and Hollywood friends – I’m disgusted with your zeal to aid and protect this cause – there is no art worth having the blood of a 13 year old child on your hands – I’ll be boycotting anyone on the free Polanski petition.
Add me on.
If this were consensual sex, even underage consensual sex, I’d be willing to accept the viewpoint of a victim obviously fed up with the media harrassment, and keen to forget all about it as quickly as possible. Sure the underage thing is distasteful, no question, but if the victim was, and is, fine with it, it’s not one for me to fight.
But this, instead, was a particularly brutal rape, which obviously traumatised the victim at the time – as good as it is to see that she’s obviously learned to live with it, that doesn’t alter that fact.
I’m gratified, though, that amongst the many signatures appealing that Polanski should not be given any punishment for fleeing justice after brutally raping a young girl, I’ve yet to see Jack Nicholson’s name – given that it was his house, I was curious to see where he stood.
I support this petition. Adults who rape children are lucky we only send them to jail.
It turns out that the documentary mentioned by a-reader was in some part based on lies: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8284452.stm
Here’s another signature. It’ absolutely ridiculous that we’re even debating this – the man raped a 13 year old girl!!! He’d just better thank his lucky stars (no pun intended) that he didn’t try this with my girls – because we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Signed, father of 5 daughters, ages 14 – 28.
This man should have been brought to justice 30 years ago. I am disgusted by the hollywood elite and how they rally around him after what he did. I honestly hope that this petition grows and can dwarf the hollywood petition.
I am in also. He should pay for the rape of the 13 year old girl.
sign me, please.

Please add me to this petition. I was so angry when I heard one of his friends being intereviewed stating that because he was a genius and brilliant director he should not have to be charged. So, does that mean if you are talented, well connected, and rich that you can get away with a crime? If Roman Polanski had been your average joe, he would be in prison right now! There should not be two types of justice systems in our society; one for the rich and one for the rest of us. There is so much injustice and hypocrisy in our society. The bottom line is that a child was drugged, raped and sodomized and we as a society need to protect the most vulnerable among us!
Please add me to this list. The fact that there are people who support this scum boggles my mind. I will boycott any actor/actress/director who supports him.
Please add my name to your petition!
he is wrenched and deserves to be in prison!! Add me to the Petition.
I support this petition and personally vow to boycott the artistic works of everyone in Hollywood who is voicing their support of a rapist. THIS is what furthers rape culture in America: its endorsement by celebrities.
Regularly view your pages and agree with you wholeheartedly. For another good commentary about the case I would refer you to Joan Smith writing in the Guardian (can be found at:

Hollywood shows its true face! Protecting one of its own, even one who has openly admitted to carrying out such despicable acts.
These people who hold such power over the media, have a duty to defend the victim not this unrepentant repulsive excuse for of a man.
If Hollywood has grown so insular from and arrogant to society at large, its time they were knocked down a peg or two.
Please add my name to the list.

Thank You
P.s. This is such an important matter of principle, and Hollywood are such a powerful political machine, I can’t help thinking that a dedicated petition website should be set up to help counter balance this machine and help persuade the politicians of the seriousness of this matter.
Although thankfully you have a true statesman in the Whitehouse who wont allow this case to be whitewashed by Hollywood’s elite. In fact I have such faith your President that I wouldn’t be surprised if he personally was involved with perusing this extradition.

Thanks for doing this. Please add my name to the petition.
Roman Polanski is a confessed child rapist and sodomizer.
He vilely, cruely and savagely sexually brutalized a 13 year old girl who he had hired as a fashion model – she begged “NO NO NO” but he raped her anyway.
Polanski then fled the country like a gutless coward and lived a life of luxury in his French and Swiss mansions for 31 years.
Polanski is a violent sexual predator and a convicted felon.
He deserves to spend the rest of his miserable pathetic life in a maximum security prison.
His degenerate Hollywood pals may think he’s a “genius” – but his fellow inmates will call him what he is – “BABY RAPER” – and will put him through a richly deserved living hell every single day of the rest of his rotten life!

Please add my name and accept my thanks and admiration for adding your voice to the outrage at the support shown for Polanski by people who should know better.
Please add my name as well. The crime was against both an individual and against society and its laws meant to protect all members. If we allow criminals to escape justice when we have the means to bring them to justice, then we are not a society of laws or justice. Moreover, he committed a second crime, that of fleeing the country. If people think he is a good man or has done good things (not including his films) that’s fine and good. However there is something that he did wrong, and Polanski must pay the consequences like anybody else would.

Add me to the petition! I am going to boycott the supporters of Polanski and try to spread the word about it. One of the directors that signed it was Wes Anderson who is coming out with a movie for kids in November called Fantastic Mr.Fox(or something like that). It blows my mind that someone could publicly invalidate a crime against a child yet direct a movie for children.
Please don’t add me and also remove all of the people above.

I do not support child rape nor any related crimes against the Human rights.
however since I’m not a regular man who reads the news “polanski rapes child” and says out loud “kill polanski” I’d say the man the world is judging is being misunderstood.
This man is truly guilty for his crimes, I would like for everyone and I mean everyone who read this post ask yourself a Question:
“if your true and only love was brutally murdered by followers of charles manson while you were out of you’re house and later coming to home to see your love of a lifetime laying down dead, would you continue the same person and then say nothing really happend that night?”
any behavior this man shows has all the rights to exist, this man is guilty for having a trauma with the weight of the world on him.
he’s guilty for child abuse but by all means put yourself in his shows before judging him without knowing who he is.
thank you for this – also here via feministe
I have been a fan of terry gilliam & tilda swinton for DECADES – both of whom have daughters. . .
beyond being able to understand, a door slams shut.
Please add my name to your petition. I am a woman and a mother and I expect him to pay for the crime he was found guilty of.
Please add my name to this petition.
DP, how does personal trauma justify child rape? And how does finding someone you love brutally murdered lead someone to become a child rapist? Of course trauma changes people, but it does not justify his immoral and illegal actions against a child. Where is your sympathy for her? And by your logic if she commits a violent crime against another, would she then be free of judgment?

Thanks.
I have a question, because i do not know US laws: Why Polanski was not sentenced in absent?
I am still glad, that I signed this petition, but when I read about victim who desires just the end and her own peace, I support this desire more even if it means free Polanski, because this woman is important, not him. I think that Polanski is already dead, his career ended and his life is definitely wreck.
