The Nine Most Terrifying Words in the English Language are “I’m From the Government And I’m Here to Help You”

The Nine Most Terrifying Words in the English Language are I'm From the Government And I'm Here to Help YouThis afternoon around noon about 50 or so protesters (many wearing Bay Area Patriots t-shirts) took to Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco protesting the Obama Healthcare plan. Although there were a few cops positioned at the protest to watch things, mostly the protest just involved peaceful assembly with protesters sharing their signs and opinions with people around who would listen.

  1. Those guys look like they are enrolled in a government health care plan called Medicare.
Then one should never overestimate the intelligence of the American public.

  2. I don’t understand the Americans these days. It seems like one of the most innovative countries in the world doesn’t want to innovative if it comes to health care. For me, as a German, that’s not understandable. We have had a more or less working health care system for decades. There are a few who don’t like some parts of it, but they don’t put the whole health care system into question, because we need it.

I am neither a supporter of all governmental actions nor am I an evangelist for the German government, but this has been established for decades and it has worked quite well in most cases. It’s easy: you pay a monthly fee and get a lot of money if something happens to you, like a car accident. It’s that easy.

But maybe it’s stereotypical for the American way (“No, I want to care for my health on my own, fuck you gov!”). Or I missunderstood what this is about. Or both.

  3. This is an interesting stiuation. Not to make this a policical thing, but being Canadian, we have public heath care. It is a double-edge sword. Free health care? You bet. Just walk into the doctor’s office or hospital, show your health card and the rest takes care of itself. Great for all walks of life and income ranges. The down side, is longer wait times, budget woes and facilities that could use sprucing up.

So while getting that MRI is now free, you have to wait 4-6 months. Which is better?

As always, Thomas, I enjoy your photos.

    Don

  4. Wise Words from Reagan. More people should get that through their thick heads. 😉 Government can’t even handle a puny (initially) 1 Billion dollar Cash for Clunkers program, and you want them to handle a 1+ Trillion health care program? Don’t think so.

  5. I’m glad that the signkeeper will not call the fire dept when his house is on fire, will forgo calling the police when someone tries to break into his house, will only pay for medical care out of pocket despite his eligibility for Medicare, will not call 911 if he falls, travels by foot but does not use the highway system, refrains from using the internet, does not receive nor send mail, avoids public libraries, and educated himself and his children privately, without recourse to any public funding, including federally guaranteed loans, and, after receiving what he paid-in plus interest, he has returned his SSA check.
