Local officials sound off on municipal wireless | CNET News.com I’m really ecstatic that Mayor Gavin Newsom is pushing for Municipal WiFi in San Francisco. And it’s nice that when SBC protests about it he can say, oh you mean SBC? As in the SBC that moved PacBell’s headquarters from San Francisco to Texas? Oh yeah, that SBC.
Right now you can get free wi-fi access at Union Square but we definitely need free wi-fi citywide. It will also be really good for tourism — not so good for hotels who want to charge you $14 a day to use broadband — but good for tourism. It will also be good for poor people that can’t pay $30 to $40 per month for broadband.
