    I have a bokeh question and I realize it is subjective. Is it "better" if the background in a closeup is a smooth blur or circles similar to this example (but not as extreme)?

    Fred I think it's just a matter of taste. Me, I probably prefer more abstract blur than more exact. But I think it just totally depends. I've been playing a lot with defocusing color for a couple years now. Mostly I like almost in focus, a bit less abstract than this, but sometimes I like stuff this abstract.

    I love the way that with more abstract stuff you can just focus on the colors of the things without having to get distracted with what a thing is per se.

    I agree about the abstract. To say that I'm nearsighted is an understatement. About 3 weeks ago I liked the look of the trees in my backyard w/o my glasses, so I grabbed my camera and took some pictures. I wrote about it in my blog. My goal was to get blotches of color in the warm, evening sun, not just some blurry pictures. The results were not as abstract as what I saw, but I liked them enough to try again some time.
