I think Drobos are terribly overpriced and overhyped. I agree that Wiebetech RAIDs are top notch, but expensive. I own two, and they have been fantastic, and the company support is terrific.

Take a look at what Lloyd Chambers has to say about the Drobo. He absolutely shreds it on a performance basis.

I am a fan of the idea of the Drobo. However a Weibitech RTX200 set at RAID 1 or RTX400 set at RAID 5 offers superior redundancy and back up.

I hope the they include the feature "Affordable" in the Drobo S. I need to see some user reviews first to justify that price.

[...] I don’t think that I’m going to pay up $800 just yet for the new Drobo, but it looks like the previous model (which has FireWire 800) has dropped in price and is now offering a $30 rebate. At $319.95, after rebate, this is the cheapest I’ve seen this model yet. If you’ve been thinking about picking up a Drobo, now might be the time to do it. [...]

Drobo's are good if you are worried about losing data due to a drive failure, but if you download a virus and then back it up, it won't protect you. It would be nice if someone could figure out a more ironclad way to make sure that your data is safe.
