12 Ways to Never Miss a Photo Opportunity

12 Ways To Never Miss A Photo Opportunity

Jim Goldstein has an interesting post up over at digital Photography School titled "12 Ways to Never Miss a Photo Opportunity."

These are my two favorites:

"2. Be sure to have not just (1) one fully charged battery but (2) two"

"4. Before heading out make sure you have CF cards in your camera that are empty or have lots of free space"

Two more that I'd add. Keep in mind though that I'm pretty extreme about this stuff.

Always have your digital SLR with you everywhere you ever go (or if you are not that committed at least have a point and shoot with you 100% of the time) and as an extension to his tip number 4, always have your laptop (or some sort of hard drive based offloading device) with you to transfer photos off your CF cards and onto storage to free up more space on your CF cards to shoot more.

I don't know how many times I've taken a bunch of pictures outside on a sunny day at ISO 1600. So I'd recommend the one about checking your settings.

Right one, blogged about this this morning as well! Like your added tips. By the way, your blog was mentioned as one of the 60 Photography Links You Can't Live Without - nice work!

Well I have a silly idea...always carry a camera with a charged battery no matter what? Sound right? :-)

The laptop thing seems a little extreme. If you mean take it while traveling, yes - but it's kind of cumbersome to have while you're out shooting. If you find yourself running out of card space, buy more cards (they're not *that* expensive).

I have about 15 GB worth of CF cards, which will hold about 800-900 raw shots between them with my Nikon D300. I don't think I've ever taken that many shots in between opportunities to offload them onto a PC.

The "always have your camera with you" tip is spot on though - so much of it is just luck; the serendipitous opportunity to take a great picture when you weren't expecting to.

As far as keeping your camera on, and in your hand, I'm a big fan of Camera Armor. It adds a comfortable amount of protection against bumping and scraping your camera on stuff, without getting in the way of the camera's functions. I highly recommend it.

I went to Patagonia for 3 weeks with a 20D and 26 GB of CF cards. Although I was worried if I had enough, I ended up only using only about 2/3rds of that space. I shot a lot, and 100% RAW.

I only consider taking my laptop if I want to be able to process photos. CF cards are way cheaper than laptops. :)

I'm rarely without a camera: almost always my OLY DSLR, but at any rate one of my p&s. I have never seen a reason to get rid of any of my p@s cameras; though some are fairly light on features compared to current offerings, I love that I still get plenty of use our of them. Of course, the DSLR is my fave...
