Had a Great Time Photowalking Sutro Baths and the Castro Last Night

Photowalkers and How They Reflect on Their World

Well I had a great time shooting last night with a great group of friends. We started out at the Sutro Baths and were rewarded by God, Mother Nature or random weather, depending on what you believe in, with an awesome sunset. San Francisco looked to be somewhat overcast yesterday, but the clouds just opened up out at the Sutro Baths and we got to see that big orange ball sink slowly into the sea.

After we shot the Sutro Baths for a while we drove over to the West Portal Muni Station. West Portal is one of muni’s architectural gems. It’s got this brilliant wide arch in the station that just dares you to whip out that ultra wide angle lens. And you better believe I did. We grabbed a train at West Portal next and headed up to the Castro Street Station.

Shooting was pretty trouble free in the Muni until the end of the night when the Castro Station Muni operator told us that we were not allowed to shoot in the Muni station. I told her that we could. She said that her supervisor from West Portal has called her and told her to be on the lookout for us. I insisted still that we were allowed to shoot in the Muni. She kept saying that it wasn’t her rule that her supervisor had called her. Finally after I kept insisting that we could shoot in the Muni she asked me if I was still going to shoot. I said yes and she said that she was then going to call her supervisor. Whoop di do dah!

The Castro was a pretty fun place to shoot. Lots of neon and great window displays. I found this great gas mask to shoot in a window display and then we also found these awesome little drink umbrellas.

While we were all shooting the Castro Theater lots of passerbys stopped to ask us why we were all shooting the theater. I told them that we were paparazzi and that Tom Cruise was inside. I figured that was the most appropriate answer given that the Castro Theater was showing a remastered version of the gay themed Al Pacino film “Cruising” back from way back. People were excited to hear that Tom Cruise was in the Castro. (Don’t sue me Tom, I was just kidding).

Anyways, we grabbed some Pizza at Escape from New York Pizza, ran into Kevin Rose there, and then continued our shooting.

Jeff Grosse
and I set up the photowalk a few weeks back when he said he was coming to town with a few friends from Sweden. I guess with the Swedes on board that made this photowalk an especially international one.

I’ve only processed a few of my photos from the night. I’ll have more of them up sporadically up over the next few weeks. The shot above is from a reflection that I shot of the group while we were shooting at the Sutro Baths early on.

I just came across your page here and love all the shots. I was wondering when your next photowalk in SF will be? I’d like to tag along if that isn’t a problem.
