Just the other day I was in Springfield, not far from this place in Arlington. We were looking for a medical building in a suburban office park, but drove up to the wrong place by mistake. Immediately two security guards came out and told us to go away. By the looks of folks going in and out of the building, it was probably also a DoD facility. Can't imagine how much they would have freaked if I had brought out my camera.

In the UK as far as i'm aware you can photograph anything from a public place, this includes buildings and people.
If a security goon approaches you in a public place remind him/her who's side the law is on and tell where he/she can go. it's that simple.
However this only applies if you are hand holding the camera, as soon as you mount the camera onto a tripod, then you are causing an obstruction and can be told to move only by the police, at worse arrested although i doubt that would happen, the secruity goon has got no jurisdiction in a public place, he/she is as you, a member of the public.
The vast majority of security types are failed police candidates and feel the need to bully people because of their insecurities.

Hope this helps.

Not sure about the specific UK laws, but I've also been hasseled by security when trying to take photo's of Disney UK's head offices (its a very nice building!), and even have them track me with security cameras as I made my way back to my car, where another secuity guard was waiting to watch me get in and drive off!

Pfft!

I am aware that taking pictures in the US on public property is completely protected. However, just recently in London I had the same sort of hassle when I was told that I could not photograph certain buildings from the public street. I should have simply gone across the Thames and photographed them with longer lenses. Blog entry (with some photos) where I talked about this here.

Can anyone from the UK clarify those laws for us?

It wasn't clear from the article whether there really was some law against taking photos of the building, although the implication was that there was such a law? If there was such a law it would surprise me, however.

Does anyone know?

I got hasseled by security when photographing the Media General building in Tampa. The irony is that Media General runs the local NBC affiliate and the Tampa Tribune.

So in other words, don't take pictures of the media's buildings.
