I'd like to point out though that the "bad information" was provided by Microsoft, not me (the journalist who wrote the original story.) I transcribed exactly what Microsoft's Senior Program Manager said in his presentation.

Besides if you ask me, Microsoft is just playing semantics. They're saying "Windows itself won't stop you... it's the DRM software that might." But that's not too different to what they said yesterday; they said they were being pressured by the content companies and that was why the decision was made.

I asked Microsoft for a list of DRM systems that will allow protected high definition playback in Vista 32 bit and so far there has been deafening silence.

My guess is that the way it will pan out is that none of the HD codecs/DRM models will work in Vista 32 bit (or ship with it), and I imagine this is what Steve Riley was saying in his presentation yesterday. (I'm happy to stand corrected though if Microsoft is able to name some high-def content protection systems that WILL work in Vista 32 bit.)
