Orb's not free if you have to have an extra PC and tuners to use it :-) If there's a free, easy option to stream dvr-ms files (and avi/divx) from what's already on my MCE, I'm interested.

Huh? You can install Orb on your MCE and stream MCE recordings and any other content, including Divx. It's free.

Of course, that stuff only matters when it's working.....

Orb is great, don't get me wrong, but it's also very buggy. A little competition never hurt anyone :-)

This "beta" is part of the new microsoft live stuff. Watch bill gates keynote from ces and they show it there also. Another news piece nobody really picked up but I saw it and said ORB IS DONE.

I agree. It is the same thing as ORB. And ORB is free!
What they need is software like Snapstream has. It's called beyond TV Link. This is actually great if you download the SDK. You can build your own interface for pvr and media functions while using the main system as a server. Can you say Custom Touch Screen Interface for your home.

I've had a love/hate relationship with Orb. I found that it used a lot of system resources even when idle. 75 megs of RAM when doing nothing, and for some reason it seemed to make my Dell computer fans go crazy after a few days (of very infrequent Orb use). Oh, and I never got it working with my ATI HDTV Wonder (despite the claim that it's supported). This was all about 4 or 5 months ago. Maybe things are better now. When it's working Orb is a fantastic application.

I just hope MSFT puts more effort into this than they did with Remote Record, which is very much inferior to WebGuide3.

But doesn't windows media encoder already do that? They just need to put a better UI on it.

Richard
www.hdbeat.com
