File Under, “It Depends on What the Meaning of the Word ‘Is’ Is”

Matt Goyer’s Microsoft Windows Media Center Blog – MCE 2005 Microsoft’s Matt Goyer says that the fact that Media Center “random” slide shows don’t start randomly is a feature not a bug.

Update: I just received word back from Matt Goyer that Microsoft is going to be re-examining and hopefully fixing this bug. I’m a little overwhelmed by how responsive Microsoft is being to my little blog out there today. This is great news!

That seems reasonable to me. Either you are going to sit and wait for processing or you are going to look at a picture. He even says how to avoid it and choose to wait for the loading time.

But why not cache 10 random photos from your recently viewed slide shows and use those during your wait time instead. This should be simple.

So I’ve chatted some more with the team who owns the pictures feature and the program manager for the team agrees that we should improve this and so I’ve filed a bug asking for this to be fixed. Which means we could very much do as you suggest.

I didn’t say ‘feature’, I said ‘by design’. Two very different things :).
