Maxtor Expands Hard Drive Capacity to Half a Terabyte

eHomeUpgrade | Maxtor Expands Hard Drive Capacity to Half a Terabyte Apparently Maxtor is going to begin shipping 500 gig drives. I have to say, having owned many many Maxtor external drives that my general impression is that they are poor drives with high failure rates and consistent problems. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.

Then again, I haven’t really found an external drive manufacturer yet that I can say I’m entirely pleased with.

I just had an internal Maxtor 200GB go down. It’s the same drive internal or external, so I would say the same about staying away.

I have 4 Maxtor drives. Two of them have been going strong for three years, and my PC runs 24/7. The other two are about a year old, and also run 24/7. No problems with any of them, knock on wood.

I’ve had two Maxtor’s go out within a year. They were great with the customer service, but the warranty is only a year. Just keep everything backed up and up to date because sooner or later, you’ll eventually need to replace it.
