fotolog.net established a pecking order via its "friends/favorites" folder, whereby one can view the most popular foto logs.

The problem is that the most popular logs are useful only to a certain clique of users, or (much larger) those who wish to be part of the clique.

For example, one of the most popular sites features pictures of peoples' meals. Great if you're into dozens of photos of hot dogs and fries. But the "beauty contest" factor kills the usefulness of links as a useful mechanism to establish a quality-based pecking order.

Fotki has a most-viewed section, which is more useful (though ordering is by photographer rather than single images), since featured logs are indeed based on the content.

What is popular? Nude photos of women (which are banned on fotolog.net); photos of cars; and blog logos designed for free by fotki members for others.

grumped@gmail.com

There too many photosharing resources which are very interesting - ex. Fotki.com, PBase.com, etc. I'm working on similar project FotosGate.com and I can't understend why are you talking only about flickr. For my opinion, Flickr is not the best example for comparison.

No, it's absolutely imperative to include the 99% or so that want to keep their photos private. This is why you will allow password protection on the site so that people can provide user IDs and passwords to designated individuals. You still will be advertising to the these micro communities, families, etc.

There still are though many who do want to publicly display their work. Flickr and photoblogging show this at minimum.

I have many photos that I keep private but many that I'd like to share with others. I suspect that others feel the same way. The key is to incorporate a place where they can do both as well as a public portal for image gathering in general. Even with 1% of the photographs taken out there as public you will have an amazing public library for downloads.

Aren't you missing the whole point about the fact that most photos that are taken in the global sense are *private*, and that people don't want to share them with in the public? They all have a private community of friends and family. Yours may be the public community at large, but 99% of camera owners have a very small and private community.
